Overcoming Fear and Taking Risks: Tips for Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

When I was creating my vision board for 2023 – one of my biggest themes for my goals this year was to step outside of my comfort zone. Easier said than done, right? For me, getting outside of my comfort zone has meant a lot of me getting out of my head and going for everything that I desire to be. While the process is still in motion, it has been pretty uncomfortable (in a good way, I would say!) and it just makes me think about how daunting being fearless actually is. I am writing this article for myself when I need to be reminded why my best self is waiting for me outside of my comfort zone – but if you also live inside of your head and often let your fears hold you back then this is mostly for you too.

Outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens!

Whether it’s starting a new business, pursuing a new career path, or simply trying something new, fear and uncertainty can hold you back from reaching your full potential. Here are some tips for overcoming fear and taking risks to step outside of your comfort zone:

1. Identifying Your Fears

The first step in overcoming fear is to identify what you’re afraid of. Is it failure? Rejection? Embarrassment? Once you know what’s holding you back, you can begin to address it. Write down your fears and analyze them objectively. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” and consider whether that outcome is truly catastrophic or simply something you can learn from.

2. Start Small

Taking big risks can be overwhelming, so it’s important to start small. Try something new that’s slightly outside of your comfort zone, such as taking a dance class or trying a new hobby. As you become more comfortable with these small risks, you can gradually work your way up to bigger challenges.

3. Visualize Success

Visualization is a powerful tool for overcoming fear and building confidence. Imagine yourself succeeding in whatever it is you want to do, and visualize the steps you need to take to get there. This can help you build a positive mindset and reduce anxiety. If you are a vividly visual person like myself, it could be a great idea to create a physical or digital vision board of what success looks like to you. Sometimes, simply seeing a picture of my dream body on my wall is enough to push me to get through a dreaded workout routine that I KNOW is my key to getting that body! 4. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

Surrounding yourself with people who believe in you and support your goals can give you the courage to take risks. Seek out mentors, friends, or family members who encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and provide constructive feedback.

5. Take Action

At some point, you have to take action and face your fears. Remember that taking risks is a necessary part of growth and achieving your goals. Be prepared to fail, and view failures as opportunities for learning and growth.

6. Embrace Uncertainty

Stepping outside of your comfort zone inevitably involves uncertainty, and that’s okay. Embrace the unknown and view it as an opportunity for growth and discovery. Trust that you’ll be able to handle whatever comes your way and remember that failure is not the end of the world. When you conquer your fear of failing, you unlock a limitless portal of potential in you!

As this beautiful month comes to an end and another begins, I hope you take more risks and you step out of your comfort zone more. Your future self will thank you!
